November 2023, and January 2024 workshops of The Maker's Space--Wet Felted Spring Bookmark Tutorial

Welcome to the Maker’s Space.  You have chosen to carve out some time in your life to slow down and notice what God might be saying to you, using art to pray with your hands.  This is not a craft night, although we will be making something.  It is different than an art class, that we are doing something that you might not have done before for a reason.  And that is to get your brain out of a left-brain control mode and intro a right brain creative and sensitive mode.  This will help you hear what God might be saying to you and notice something that you haven’t noticed before.

We are now going to focus on our breath, to start to leave all that we have brought in with us at the door, so we can meet with God and create with Him.

3 minutes

Breathe in: “Many are the plans in a man’s heart,”

Breathe out:  “But it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”  Proverbs 19:21

"Give up the illusion of being in control of your life. When things are going smoothly, it’s easy to feel as if you’re in charge. The more you perceive yourself as your own master, and the more comfortable you become in this role, the harder you will fall.  I want you to enjoy times of smooth sailing and be thankful for them.  But don’t become addicted to this sense of mastery over your life, and don’t consider it the norm.  Storms will come, and uncertainties will loom on the horizon.  If you cling to control and feel entitled to having things go your way, you are likely to sink when difficulties come.  I am training you to trust in Me at all times—for I am your Refuge.  I use adversity to set you free from the illusion of being in control.  Find your security in knowing Me, the Master who is sovereign over the storms of your life—over everything. Jesus Always 11/3

Every time something thwarts your plans or desires, use that as a reminder to communicate with Me. This practice has several benefits. The first is obvious: Talking with Me blesses you and strengthens our relationship. Another benefit is that disappointments, instead of dragging you down, are transformed into opportunities for good.  This transformation removes the sting from the difficult circumstances, making it possible to be joyful in the midst of adversity"…Jesus Calling 11/3

Think of something that is a current difficulty that might be standing in the way of some of your plans.  Breathe, and hold it up to God.  Step away from it and try to look at it from above.  If you can’t do that yet, give it over to Him and let him hold it and deal with it.  Let Him transform it into an opportunity.  Breathe.  Let it go. Let Him hold it for a while.

Now, open your eyes.  We are going to be making a bookmark with the art of felting, maybe what you haven’t done before.  Felting, takes wool and bamboo fibers and transforms them by knitting them together with water and agitation.  Perhaps, you can imagine your plans or obstacles that God can transform with agitation into something beautiful and beyond your current imagination.  While we are doing the process, I want you to be thinking of someone that you are thankful and who might appreciate this bookmark.  As you are making it, think of that person and all the things that you are thankful for and things that you can pray into that person’s life.  Then that bookmark will become a prayer letter.  If you want to keep the bookmark, think of the flowers as people or things that you are thankful for.  It still will become a prayer letter that you will remember every time you see it.

Let’s hold up our bookmarks and share a bit of what your prayed for the recipient of this book mark.  Or what the flowers in your garden represent.  You do not have to specify who it is for unless you want to.

We will be using our hands in thanksgiving as we explore the art of felting wool.  This is not your ordinary craft class, but a time of slowing down and praying with our hands and listening to what God might be speaking.  We will be using materials and instructions from Esther's Place in Big Rock, IL  You can access her youtu.be video at www.esthersplacefibers.com
