Image
Our March Fabric Art Meeting created wonderful banners. Our evening can be seen on YouTubehttps://youtu.be/9gL7lcTGrSc We were inspired by the "I Am's" of Jesus. February Mosaic at The Maker's Space

Image
It was a big week for art.  We built a wall of cinderblocks for our Lenten series of communal fasts.  The wall represents the chaos of our lives with Christ in the midst of it and the pansies [derived from the French word 'pensees' or thoughts] represent our participation in various fasts offered during Lent. At the Maker's Space, we explored the art of Mosaic, using paint chips on black paper. After walking through an imaginary garden in our minds, these are the gardens that emerged...

When Children Beat Adults at Seeing the World

Image
It is such a joy to learn to see the world through the eyes of children.  To allow children to teach us how to worship God is essential because it is effortless for them.  They see things they we do not see because they notice what is there and what is not there.  It is easy for them to believe in someone greater than themselves.  It is easy for them to use their imagination to connect with the Maker of the Universe.  It is not a stretch for them to believe in power beyond themselves.  Their faith in the impossible is strong.  That is why they are the most powerful teachers of God and worship because they listen and observe. The following article talks of an experiment with children and adults on "noticing."  In our fast-paced world, it is the 'slowing down to notice' that gets left out.  This is all the more reason to slow down, notice the beauty and what we are missing going about our daily lives.  What are we missing?  What ...

January Maker's Space

Makers Space Community Art Group explored a different type of art this month.  We focused on the art of Narrative Writing.  The elements of Narrative writing are: learning to pay attention to the narratives and stories of others. Recognition that we each hold a unique narrative. Finding a connection point with the narrative of others. Learning to express empathy with others. Empathy is conceptualized in terms of three important elements: the ability to observe emotions in others, the ability to feel those emotions, and finally the ability to respond to those emotions.  In one of the writing exercises participants were instructed to draw their hand.  The facilitator then asked the participant to look at the hand-your hand, your hand has a history.  That hand is apart of your narrative.  What story comes to your mind when you see that hand? They then wrote for 15-20 minutes. After writing they shared their stories while the other participants were act...

December Meeting of The Maker's Space-Mosaic

Image
Our teacher Susan, described a mosaic bowl that was ordered and not so interesting.  She then broke the beautiful stones lose, to be used somewhere in a free, beautiful pattern.  Our only instructions were not to think, but to make a road of broken pieces.  This was the result: YouTubehttps://youtu.be/w2wuL2pzPXc Our projects will be added to/and or grouted in our February Meeting where we will continue the art of Mosaic.  If you were unable to come, but would still like to try this, you are welcome to bring in your broken plates and make a beautiful piece of art.
